The Challenge

Wisteria Had Taken Over the Woods

Wisteria is one of the biggest problems we run into around the Triangle, and this Durham property, on the Chapel Hill side of town, was a perfect example. The homeowners moved in a couple of years ago and just hadn’t gotten to the outside yet. In the meantime, overgrown wisteria had taken over their woods.

Then Duke Energy came through and left a pile of brush right on their front yard. They wanted somebody to come in and clean it all up.

Our Approach

Hand Work, Grapple and Mulcher

Our Bigfoot Forestry – The Triangle crew showed up with the forestry mulcher and the grapple. We grappled the downed logs from the Duke Energy pile and loaded them into a dumpster for haul-off.

The wisteria was the real job. A machine can’t get all of it, so a good part of the wisteria had to be cleared by hand. That hand work is why this one took closer to three days. Then we forestry mulched the woods, chewing up the wisteria and undergrowth and leaving the standing trees in place.

Along the road we cleared the easement as close as we safely could, keeping our distance from the power lines.

One honest note on wisteria: we mulch it, we don’t dig it out, so it can come back. Knocking it back is how you get your woods back, and keeping an eye on it afterward keeps them that way.
